Her work focuses on the medieval East Slavic world and she has done extensive
field work in Ukraine and Russia. Her work explores the negotiation of
cultural, geographic and temporal distances in medieval Byzantine and Rus'
visual culture. She authored the essay on Kyivan Rus' and entries on loan
objects from Eastern Europe for The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogue The
Glory of Byzantium, and edited the volume Perceptions of Byzantium and Its
Neighbors (843-1261) (Yale, 2000). Currently she is completing a book entitled
Between Identity and History: The Church of St. Cyril and the Interpretation of
Kyivan Rus' Culture.
