Prof. DeWeese specializes on the history of Islam in Central and Inner Asia,
with a particular focus on Islamization and on the development of Sufi
communities. He is the author of Islamization and Native Religion in the Golden
Horde (1994), and numerous articles; his current projects include a history of
the Yasavi Sufi tradition, a collaborative work on a 14th-century narrative of
Islamization and its later elaborations, and a critical analysis of studies of
Islam in contemporary Central Asia.
